Birding at Eastford

Curiosity takes flight

An Observatory for Ornithologist

Eastford is a haven for bird enthusiasts, offering a rich mix of habitats and countless opportunities to observe birdlife up close. A network of hiking trails and scenic viewpoints lets you explore the landscape at your own pace, while a new bird hide (currently under construction) will soon provide a quiet vantage point over one of our ponds.

Several dams and wetlands attract thriving colonies of weaverbirds, whose intricate nests are a highlight for visitors. Down in the Knysna River Valley, the distinctive call of the African Fish Eagle can often be heard — and with luck, you may catch sight of one soaring overhead.

Every evening, flocks of Sacred Ibis sweep across the skies in spectacular flyovers. Closer to home, many residents have set up bird feeding stations that draw in sunbirds, sugarbirds, and other nectar feeders, creating excellent opportunities to watch these colourful species at close range.

For a glimpse of the incredible variety of birds seen in the reserve, don’t miss the  👉 Resident’s Gallery, featuring among others photographs captured on-site by members of our community.

Whether you are an experienced birder or just starting out, [Nature Reserve Name] offers a chance to connect with birds in their natural environment — from the smallest nectar-lovers to the valley’s majestic raptors.
