Living Safely with Snakes & Baboons

Baboons and a few venomous snake species play an important role in the ecosystem of Eastford. The most commonly encountered snakes in the area include the puffadder, boomslang, night adder, and occasionally the harlequin snake. Sightings are rare and most snakes avoid human contact entirely.

While snake presence is natural in a reserve setting, residents are to be vigilant and aware of their presence — especially when walking trails, gardening, or clearing bush. Should anyone encounter a snake on one’s property and wants it removed, do not attempt it yourself or harm it. The Knysna Fire Department offers a quick and professional snake removal and relocation service to ensure safety for both people and animals.

Baboons

While sightings of baboons and vervet monkeys are not frequent, occasional visits from baboon troops do occur — especially if food sources are unintentionally made available. It’s important to understand what attracts baboons and how to respond appropriately to their presence. The most effective way to avoid baboon-related issues is to avoid food sources around your home. Therefore:

  • Do not plant fruit or vegetable gardens, or use secure netting if you do.
  • Keep compost bins sealed and avoid composting food scraps that give off scent.
  • Never feed baboons — it is illegal and encourages dangerous habituation.
  • Store pet food indoors and remove bird feeders if baboons are active.
  • Use secure refuse bins with tight lids.
  • Avoid leaving open windows or doors unattended.
  • Don’t leave food on verandas or in unlocked vehicles.
  • Never try to chase or confront a baboon — this can provoke aggression.

Under South African law, baboons are protected wildlife. It is illegal to harm, feed, poison, or trap them without a permit. The goal is coexistence — not conflict. By staying alert, respecting wildlife, and knowing who to call, residents can enjoy the natural beauty of Eastford with confidence and peace of mind.
